Summer Sustainability Interns

WashU School of Medicine sustainability coordinator, Heather Craig, leads Office of Sustainability summer interns on a tour of the weekly WUSM Farmers Market.

The Office of Sustainability kicked off the summer with a group of six amazing and talented WashU students who are devoting their time off of school to advancing institutional sustainability. Learn more about these incredible students below!

Brooke is a rising senior from Los Angeles, CA majoring in Environmental Analysis with minors in Communication Design and the Business of Social Impact. She is excited to work with the Office of Sustainability’s Communications team to continue shedding light on sustainable achievements across campus! At WashU she is also a member of the Student SustainabilityBoard and Washington University Dance Collective. In her free time, you can find her dancing, reading, walking her dog, or baking plant-based desserts.

Green Office Intern

Julia is a junior from San Francisco majoring in Environmental Biology with a minor in the Business of Social Impact. Julia took a gap year before attending WashU, and spent the fall semester working on local and national campaigns, followed by 70 days of backpacking through the Pacific Northwest this past spring. Julia interned for the Go Green Initiative, which solidified her goal of pursuing sustainability in college. Julia is so excited to work with the Green Office team in broadening the program and learning more about WashU’s commitment to sustainability.

Mia Phutrakul is a junior environmental engineering student from Warrensburg, MO, with passions including environmental justice and sustainable infrastructure. They are actively involved in various clubs on campus, including the Wilderness Project, Burning Kumquat, WUGAs, and Triathlon Club. Mia loves to stay active and explore the great outdoors through activities like running, biking, and backpacking. They are also a dedicated cat lover and enjoy spending time with their pets. Through their academic pursuits and extracurricular involvement, Mia is excited to make a positive impact on the environment and promote sustainable practices.

Ellie Rogers is a senior from Summit, New Jersey majoring in Environmental Analysis and minoring in Business of Social Impact. In her free time, she enjoys photography, writing, crocheting, and being outside. She spent her last semester in Copenhagen studying Sustainable Development. Ellie is looking forward to working with the OOS to support the development of WashU’s next Strategic Plan for Sustainable Operations.

Valerie Viteri is a junior student from New York City majoring in Chemical Engineering and minoring in Energy Engineering. She is excited to learn more about the sustainability projects on campus, especially those involving renewable energy and carbon neutrality. She hopes to keep developing her passions, exploring her interests, and enhancing the community. She enjoys playing sports, spending time with friends, and caring for her succulents in her spare time.
