This summer, the Office of Sustainability, in partnership with Parking and Transportation Services (Danforth) and the Operations & Facilities Management Department (WUSM), is bringing back the Summer Commuter Resource Fair series, featuring services and service providers that support employees and graduate students in their transportation choices.
Alternative transportation – which includes biking, walking, public transit, carpooling and rideshare – combines the benefits of having a low impact on the environment, saving you time and money, and keeping you healthy!
To best serve the WashU community and encourage participation in the Summer Commuter Resource Fairs, we will be hosting four sessions, on both the Danforth and the Medical campuses:
- June 26, 11a – 2p: Danforth campus DUC Edison Courtyard
- July 12, 11a – 2p: Medical campus Hope Plaza (in conjunction with the farmers’ market!)
- August 1, 11a – 2p: Danforth campus DUC Edison Courtyard
- August 9, 11a – 2p: Medical campus Hope Plaza (in conjunction with the farmers’ market!)
All fairs will feature free bike tune-ups performed by Velofix, a mobile bike shop that provides repair services for every kind of bike. This locally operated company has creatively managed to fit a whole repair station in the back of a van! Within these few cubic meters, Francesca DeRanzo, owner and operator of the local Velofix shop, performs repairs and shares basic maintenance tips that will extend the life of your bike and increase safety.
Once you register at the check in tent, you will be able to leave your bike for repair and receive a text when it is ready for pick up. In the mean time, you can visit the community and campus partners tabling at the fair, enjoy a fresh smoothie and meet fellow bikers!
After a year of construction in the East End and parking changes, alternative transportation has become increasingly significant at WashU, leading many car commuters to drop the car habit for healthier, more sustainable and convenient options. The summer commuter fair series supports our active commuters but also encourages all others to consider alternatives to single occupant vehicles. With a beautiful weather and an empty campus, summer is the best time for a change!
