Community Water

Shoe Drive for Clean Water Projects

Do you have unneeded pairs of gently used shoes? If so, please consider donating them to a great cause! WashU is participating in an annual collection drive in partnership with area universities and Shoeman Water Projects, a local nonprofit organization that exports shoes to street vendors in developing communities around the world. The funds generated from this year’s drive will help finance a water well that will bring clean, fresh water to residents in Kashongi Village, Uganda.

This year’s partner institutions include St. Louis University and Fontbonne University. We have set a collective goal of 15,000 pounds of donations, with one pair of shoes weighing approximately one pound. The Danforth Campus has an aggressive goal of collecting 3,000 pairs of shoes.

You can help us meet this goal by dropping shoes off now through the end of May. Plastic bins and cardboard boxes marked with Shoeman Water Projects are located at the following locations:

  • Myers Hall (Office of Sustainability)
  • Alumni House
  • Millbrook Facilities building
  • Sam Fox School (Givens and Bixby Halls)
  • Women’s Building (Campus Card Office)
  • North Campus cafeteria
  • Athletic Complex (Student Athlete Lounge, Bottom Floor)
  • Bon Appetit Offices (next to Bear’s Den)

If you would like a collection bin in your building or office area, please contact Cheryl Waites at 314-935-3646.
