Buildings Community Energy & Emissions

LEED AP Exam Preparation Course

The Office of Sustainability is hosting a two-day preparation course for the LEED Accredited Professional Building Design and Construction (LEED AP BD&C) exam. This exam builds on the Green Associate (GA) credential by providing expertise in a particular LEED Rating System; in this case, Building Design and Construction.

The LEED AP BD&C exam is designed to measure knowledge and skill in understanding the LEED Rating System and one’s ability to facilitate the project certification process. This course is designed to prepare participants for the LEED AP BD&C Specialty exam. Skilled instructors will discuss categories and credits in the LEED BD&C Rating System, explore methods of sustainable project delivery and green building practices, and offer test-taking tips. Subject areas covered include:

  • Location and Transportation
  • Sustainable Sites
  • Water Efficiency
  • Energy and Atmosphere
  • Materials and Resources
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Innovation
  • Test Taking Tips
  • Practice Exam

At the conclusion of the course, participants will receive access to an online practice exam to continue their studies.

Enrollment in the course is available at no charge for those affiliated with Washington University. Breakfast and lunch and access to practice exams are included for course participants.*

The primary goal of the course is to support WashU staff seeking to become experts in sustainability areas relevant to their work through the certification process. The secondary goal is to invite all staff who influence WashU’s built environment to become more aware of sustainability considerations and more confident in seeking sustainable solutions while planning, building, and maintaining campus buildings and grounds. Therefore, while we encourage all course participants to plan to take the LEED AP BD&C exam, it is not required to take the exam upon course completion. Note that study beyond the prep course will be required prior to sitting for the exam. We understand that all course participants may not be able to invest the required time beyond course participation.

Hosting professional development courses on campus addresses an important objective within the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan for Sustainable Operations: Continue to enhance staff sustainability knowledge and skills in capital projects, operations and maintenance, and custodial and grounds teams. The specific strategy is to offer opportunities to gain green credentials, including LEED GA, LEED Accredited Professional, and IFMA Sustainability Facility Professional.

The positive dynamic of having numerous representatives from the teams that plan, design, build, and operate Washington University’s built environment is a primary benefit of hosting the course for WashU members. In addition to introducing and reinforcing the goals outlined within the Strategic Plan, stakeholders are able to discuss applications of green building concepts with tangible examples that are immediately applicable to participants’ work.
