Share Our Stuff: Move-Out Collections

Residential Life has prepared numerous collection sites for on-campus residents to easily be able to donate a wide variety of materials. Collection sites are located on the first floor or basement of each Residential Hall and will be available from April 15-May 20 2024.

Collection sites have bins/spaces for specific items, each designated by a sign. Please sort items accordingly. Do not leave items that are broken, in poor condition, or that are not on the list below.

Accepted Materials:

• Furniture and furnishings
• Plastic drawers, shelving and storage
• Small and large household items
• Clean clothing, shoes, and linens
• Unopened, nonperishable food
• Office & art supplies
• Books & textbooks
• Appliances and electronics
• Cleaning supplies & equipment — please bag any open supplies to prevent leaking and seal lids well.
• Unopened toiletries, new reusable or disposable masks; liquid hand soap and hand sanitizer can be open — please bag to prevent leaking

Additional Items:

• Working and non-working computers and computer accessories can be dropped off at STS between 9am and 5pm, M-F. Please indicate if item is working or broken.
• Bikes can be donated by contacting sustainability@wustl.edu.

Collection locations: 

Greenway Apartments: One location (on 1^st floor close to east staircase near elevator). Resident access only.

The Loft Apartments:

• 6200 Enright – lobby lounge on best available wall
• 6300 Enright – 1^st floor within the MPR
• 6255 Delmar – 2^nd floor lounge

Note: Rosedale and U Drive apartments do not have collection locations. Residents can utilize free drop off at the Circularity Center during open hours and/or drop small items in outdoor collection bins outside of the warehouse. Items must fit within the bins; please do not overfill.

Collection Events

Students can also schedule a pick-up of large items (furniture, etc.) on select collection dates (2024): May 14, 15, 24, 28 and June 28. The scheduling form for collection events will only be active until 2 days prior to the event, or until pick-up slots are full. If you are not able to schedule a pick-up time, or if you only have small items, you can drop them off the day of the event, between 9 am and 3 pm. The collection event will be held at North Campus (700 Rosedale Ave.); signage will direct you to the drop-off site.

A small fee is charged for donation and disposal pick-ups. The fee offsets a portion of the expense of moving and disposal services and varies based on proximity to campus and concentration of WashU-owned properties in the area. The donation form outlines acceptable items – items outside of the parameters will not be picked up and remain the responsibility of the student.

• Bulky items (furniture, etc.) in good/working condition (for donation and reuse) or for responsible disposal
• Small items in good/working condition (see materials list above)
• Donation items should be clean and in working order. Bag and tape or secure hardware or removable parts, remotes, etc. to larger items. Box or bag donations carefully and seal well to assist with transit. Label box or bag with “SOS DONATION.”

Drop off by appointment

Students with large items (furniture, etc.) can drop off for donation or disposal BY APPOINTMENT ONLY at WashU’s North Campus. You must schedule a time for someone to meet you at the Circularity Center. Dumping furniture without an appointment is illegal and WUPD will be patrolling the area. Scheduled appointments are available during business hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm, M-F. Email Laurie Brady (lmbrady@wustl.edu) and use SOS DROP OFF in the subject line.

If not within the service area, you can bring items to North Campus during a collection event or by appointment for donation or disposal. See below for details.

Donation Drop Off

Students with large items (anything greater than 30lbs, furniture, etc.) can drop off for donation or disposal BY APPOINTMENT ONLY at WashU’s North Campus. You must schedule a time for someone to meet you at the Circularity Center. Dumping furniture without an appointment is illegal and WUPD will be patrolling the area. Students are encouraged to connect with other students directly to sell or giveaway their unwanted items at the end of the semester. WashU offers WashUReuse, an exchange platform that is free and open to all in the WashU community. Users can sign up easily with their WashU e-mail address and start posting right away. An in-app message board will allow you to ask questions of the owner and set up the details of the exchange.

Note that posts will be visible to all WashU staff, faculty and students. If you only want to give/sell to students, include that information in your post.

You can also try public exchange platforms on Facebook (Marketplace, Buy Nothing Groups, WashU Free & For Sale), or craigslist to sell or giveaway your belongings.

Done with your bike? Contact sustainability@wustl.edu if you would like to donate your bike to a new user.

Students are encouraged to donate extra meal points to the Feed the Bears fund, which supports WashU students in need of greater food security. This can be done through the Dining Services website or the GrubHub app.

Advanced scheduling is required. All items should be in good condition. Fees may apply.

Note that the Circularity Center donates many of the materials collected through the WashU donation sites to a wide variety of local non profits.

Not all materials are suitable for donation. Please review the list of accepted items before putting into donation bins.

For students in off-campus housing, we do have some options for responsibly disposing of electronic waste (e-waste), furniture, and other bulky items.

• E-waste should never be thrown in the landfill or recycling bins. E-waste, defined as “anything with a cord or battery,” should be responsibly recycled through a certified recycler. Students are encouraged to take e-waste to STS for recycling (open during business hours). If you are including e-waste in donation drop off or pick up, please clearly label as broken/non-working so that we don’t hand it off to a non-profit and shift the burden of managing the e-waste to them.
• You can participate in a collection event by requesting a pick-up on one of the scheduled event days if you are within the service area. Specify that the item is not in usable condition.
• Your landlord may provide options or instructions for how to deal with bulky items at move-out time.
• WashU provides dumpsters for WashU students to responsibly dispose of bulky items at several locations: 745 Interdrive and 6645 Washington Avenue
• WashU students can drop off bulky items for disposal at North Campus by appointment (see details above for bulky donation). Do not drop off without an appointment – this is illegal dumping and WUPD will be monitoring the area.
