Established around the turn of the 20th century and located near the end of one of St. Louis’ streetcar lines, Maplewood was originally built as a residential community. Over time, it began to attract more businesses and is now being revitalized by a large influx of restaurants, businesses, and shops around the Greenwood Historic District.
In 2014, the Green Dining Alliance (GDA) named Maplewood its first-ever “Green Dining District” – a special business district or designated community in which 25% or more of all independently-owned dining establishments are GDA-certified. Maplewood’s Special Business District (SBD), which is on Manchester and spans from Southwest Avenue to Sutton Boulevard, is now the nation’s first green dining destination. Participating restaurants are committed to reducing, recycling, and composting waste, as well as sourcing sustainable food, to-go ware, and cleaning supplies.
This quaint and sustainable community is sure to be a great new destination for your upcoming weekend! Here are several options to check out. You can also use this interactive map to navigate the various GDA restaurants.
