Seeking to beautify your event on a budget? Or, are you questioning whether or not it’s worth it to buy something for a one-time use? Try these alternatives instead!
Don’t buy: share and reuse!
- Student Sustainability Board has a loan library of event decor that can be requested by student groups for their events. Review their inventory and submit a request here.
- Try your luck at finding what you need at WashU’s Circularity Center, SWAP’s on campus thrift store, or via a post on WashUReuse! Once you are done, pay it forward by donating un-needed decor to any of these places for reuse.
Lanyards
- Request through WashUReuse
- If purchasing, select a non-branded or generic WashU option
Giveaways
- Try searching the SWAG closet tag on WashUReuse
- Reach out to the Circularity Center to see what new branded items they have in stock
- Donate your extras to the Circularity Center or post on WashUReuse
Signage
- Avoid vinyl banners and foamcore – both are not recyclable and made from chemicals that have high levels of toxicity in the production and disposal points of their lifecycles
- Create signage that is timeless and adaptable for future use
- If making yard signs, reuse the H-stakes if possible
Easels
- Borrow easels through Event Management Services
Building out your own collection? Consider these tips:
- Mason jars make for very adaptable centerpieces
- Simple, durable vases are a good investment if you often host events with floral arrangements. Note that many florists can also provide vases that they will reuse, saving you the hassle of storage and transportation.
- Tablecloths in WashU’s colors can spruce up an event and are easily utilized at other events.
- Coordinate with event organizers at other departments to understand their inventory and share across teams.
