Student Union Urges Addition of Solar Panels

Student Union recently issued a resolution urging Washington University to purchase more solar panels before a 30% federal tax break expires at the end of 2016. According to SU Senate member Stella Schindler, “This might be the University’s final opportunity to reduce its coal dependence in a financially sustainable manner. With the tax break, the cut in utility bills might help us break even with the expense of the panels. Without the tax break, solar panels may never again be a fiscally viable option.”

The addition of solar panels would elevate the LEED status of many of the University’s newest, environmentally-friendly building projects. It would also reduce the University’s dependence on Missouri’s coal-fueled power plants, which produce a shocking 83% of the state’s electric power.
